The Hole in the Heart of the World

And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

To know God. That is the end of all things. It is the purpose of all things. It is the never ending hole in all humanity, which leaves the deepest longing, sparks the greatest fear, and demands the greatest of all struggles.  In the midst of our greatest pain, something cries out from deep within us to know why, and there can only be a why if there is a God. It is our natural instinct to expect a why behind it all. The deepest question of the human soul lies in the desperate need to know God. The thread that binds every human soul throughout history is the ever present “why?”

That which is celebrated in the human heart finds its existence in the character of God.  Honor, bravery, selfless love, romance, forgiveness, mercy, faith; these are all cherished supremely in the whole of humanity yet given breath in the Name of God. That which moves our hearts the most seems a taste of a different world from ours, and indeed it is. Yet it seems to be at home somewhere deep within us.

If only the eyes of the world could be open to understand, that which they cherish and find the greatest fulfillment and joy in, is a gift of God’s grace — a taste of Himself.  Taste and see that the Lord is good.  Though it seems that we can never seem to get our arms fully around it and hold it close enough that it becomes truly ours. There is an ever-present gulf between that which we know is glorious and good, and that which we can really grasp our hands around.
