Beautiful Inheritance

This song was inspired by a study through the book of Joshua. Stephanie had been going through the study and the Lord used it in a special way to encourage her and grow her faith. She began to write notes of all the things the Lord was emphasizing to her, and we eventually sat down together and put this song together.

We are all going to go through wilderness times. The Lord uses these times to test us and see if we will believe His promises and obey His Word. The Israelites continually complained and spoke against Joshua and God. They were worn out from eating manna and living in the wilderness. God had made great promises to them, but they were struggling to believe.

During the waiting, the Israelites forgot who they were and Who God was. Although they had seen Him perform great miracles, their faith was fading and they began to complain and long to be back in Egypt. We can do this ourselves. We remember a time when we think we had it better, and in so doing, we belittle the promise that God has made, and we deny the glory of God. God is faithful and able. He is good and unfailing. Every promise He has made, He will keep.

The day finally came, and Joshua led the people of God into the promise land. Eventually, we are told in Joshua 21:45 that not one word of all the good promises God had made to the house of Israel failed.

This story is pointing to so much more than just the land the Israelites possessed. It is an illustration of the great promise we have in Jesus. The following passages speak to this. And these are the passages that we used to craft this song.

As a child of God, not only do we get ALL the promises of His blessing and provision, we get Jesus, our beautiful inheritance! So this is a song about us, God’s people, wandering through our own wilderness, celebrating the joy we can have in Christ right now as we also wait for the full joy and fulfillment of our eternal home.

Scriptures:

(Psalm 16:5–6) — The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. 6The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. (1 Peter 1:3–8) — Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.

(1 Peter 2:9–10) — But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

(Ezekiel 34:25–31) — “I will make with them a covenant of peace and banish wild beasts from the land, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26And I will make them and the places all around my hill a blessing, and I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be showers of blessing. 27And the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase, and they shall be secure in their land. And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke, and deliver them from the hand of those who enslaved them. 28They shall no more be a prey to the nations, nor shall the beasts of the land devour them. They shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid. 29And I will provide for them renowned plantations so that they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land, and no longer suffer the reproach of the nations. 30And they shall know that I am the Lord their God with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, declares the Lord God. 31And you are my sheep, human sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Lord God.”
